My Painting Experiment

This was a painting that my mom had did years ago. I always loved it and was overjoyed when she let me have it when they moved to Las Vegas. Admittedly, it was never hung up due to its size and the lack of wall space in my old house. Along with that, it had a very dark subject matter. It was during a very dark time for my mom and so the subject matter was very dark and sinister. Afterall it included the statue "Rape of the Sabine Woman", a bathroom scene and a book entitled "Sinner's Guide" placed on the back of the toilet!!! I loved it as I do all of mom's work but it was kind of depressing and I really wanted to hang it in my new house but felt that the only place it would work was in one of my bathrooms not only because of the content but also because the colors matched perfectly. Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit in my bathroom. So I decided, with her permission, if I could revamp the painting and this is what I've come up with thus far.

Oh, btw,I know I said I was gonna talk about aliens but that'll have to wait.

  1. The painting of the woman was indeed from a dark place but now you have rescued her by giving her an escape from harsh reality. I have a feeling you were not aware really of making any sort of statement with what you were painting. This is wonderful.

  2. Actually, I kind of was doing that (freeing her) and it was supposed to be about home (i.e. the castle)....and the key was, and may still, have a chain dangling from the man's hand (a real chain) but I am not sure that this is the right statement. I was thinking of covering the man's hands with the red scarf but it will cover too much of statue so I am at a stand still here. Any suggestins?

  3. I feel it is just the right mix - the dark, being held back part of life and the going towards light and freedom. It is hard to look at the dark, but this is what life is, no? I think the chain would be an overkill as it is not always a mans fault that women are held back. Sometimes it is our own inner chains. Maybe this idea could lead to a series of paintings?

  4. Well, the chain on the man's hand holding the key would indicate that HE gave her freedom or...a home. But do we wanna give men THAT much credit especially THIS man for crissakes! ;)

  5. Joey and I watched the video and he was very fascinated. He thought, what ended up being the castle, was a door at first.

    Nice job, Julie!
